AUdebutDITION INFORMATION

Auditions for the VYSO are held in a calm and relaxed environment. We strive to put students at ease so they can show us their best. Auditions will be judged according to musicianship, instrumental ability, sight-reading ability and specific instrumental requirements of each orchestra. Piano accompaniment is not required.

Three to four adjudicators (orchestra conductors, string assistants and professional musicians from the community) will consider each prospective student’s combination of abilities and come to a decision. See audition requirements below.

Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your VYSO Audition:

  1. Be sure you understand all audition requirements and work with your private instructor on the audition material.
  2. Allow plenty of time to prepare the required excerpts in order to have it performance-ready.
  3. Listen to recordings of the excerpts you are to prepare. This may help you project confidence as you audition.
  4. Practice sight-reading.
  5. Play something you have thoroughly prepared that best showcases your musical ability.
  6. Perform in front of family and friends to prepare for performing in front of an audience.
  7. Do your best and enjoy!

“I have now been at VYSO for 10 seasons and I cannot imagine my Saturdays without orchestra rehearsals. It has been a big part of who I am… and has helped me appreciate and love music.”
