Founded in 1930 by an amateur flautist, VYSO has been British Columbia’s premier training orchestra for nearly a century. From the beginning ensemble player to the most advanced, the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra (VYSO) has a long, proud history of providing young musicians with the highest possible standard of orchestral training.
A Path to Excellence
Today, the VYSO is recognized throughout Greater Vancouver for its excellent multi-level orchestral training program. Many former VYSO musicians launch into acclaimed musical careers, proudly representing Vancouver on the local, national, and international stage. And many of our 285 VYSO musicians will follow in their footsteps.
It’s VYSO’s mission to nurture and develop young musicians, both artistically and as individuals. We provide young musicians with the opportunity to discover, explore, and realize their potential in a secure yet challenging environment.
For the Aspiring Soloist
Violin, cello, or trombone, sometimes you just need to shine alone. For musicians who aim to develop as soloists, we conduct annual concerto competitions. Winners receive the opportunity to perform as concert soloists with their orchestra.
Our Commitment to Affordability
We are firmly committed to keeping our program accessible, regardless of financial constraints. The VYSO’s year-round fundraising efforts ensure that tuition fees remain affordable. And we’re hugely grateful to the many generous donors in our community who help us keep this commitment.
VYSO and our Community: A Dynamic Duo
While making a difference in the lives of our young musicians, the VYSO also contributes to the dynamism of the local and provincial community. We join with other community groups in support of their youth programs, and we invite music students and seniors to enjoy VYSO concerts as our guests.
Be a Player! Volunteer at VYSO
The VYSO and its many programs would be nowhere without the countless hours donated by dedicated volunteers. We welcome with open arms anyone willing to lend a hand. Volunteer opportunities include: Light administrative work, pre-concert prep, backstage management and front of house staffing, equipment transfer (got a truck?), publicity, program notes, photo- and video-documenting and more. Will you give it a try? We’ll do our best to match your interests with our needs. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call 604 737-0714 for more information.
