In today’s VYSO Archives we remember the late maestro Kazuyoshi Akiyama with whom our senior orchestra had the honour of working with at this joint concert with the UBC Symphony Orchestra (@ubcso, then called the UBC Orchestra) on January 17, 1988. Akiyama was the guest conductor for the show, and the musicians brought performances of Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini, Saint-Saëns’s Piano Concerto No. 2, and Franck’s Symphony in D Minor to life for the audiences. He is remembered for his advocacy for contemporary repertoires, providing opportunities for composers to have their work performed in Vancouver.
