As we wrap up our 95th anniversary season, we have also been getting ready to say goodbye to a member of our team, as Intermediate Orchestra Conductor Jin (Jack) Zhang (@jinzzh312) will be retiring at the end of this month. Since joining in 1997/98 season, Jin has been a part of VYSO for 27 seasons, and has no doubt been an important part of our community. Having studied at Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, throughout his career Jin has been recognized with honours including the AVIFF Award at Cannes 2018, and the Artistic Achievement Awards. We’ve been honoured to have Jin be an instrumental part of the orchestra for so many years, and wish him all the best in his future endeavors. In today’s VYSO Archives we remember the late maestro Kazuyoshi Akiyama with whom our senior orchestra had the honour of working with at this joint concert with the UBC Symphony Orchestra (@ubcso, then called the UBC Orchestra) on January 17, 1988. Akiyama was the guest conductor for the show, and the musicians brought performances of Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini, Saint-Saëns’s Piano Concerto No. 2, and Franck’s Symphony in D Minor to life for the audiences. He is remembered for his advocacy for contemporary repertoires, providing opportunities for composers to have their work performed in Vancouver.
