Earlier this month, our 95th anniversary concert at The Orpheum was attended by alumni, family and friends, the music community, music enthusiasts and more, a true celebration of the community that VYSO has had the honour of nurturing. On behalf of everyone at VYSO, we wanted to thank every single one of you who came out to support us for this special occasion and make it possible for us to continue doing the work that we love to do. While we’re taking a step back from social media for the summer, we’re already hard at work planning for an exciting new season that kicks off in the fall. Until then, take care! Welcome to the newest member of the VYSO team! W

Welcome to the newest member of the VYSO team! We’re excited to announce that Samuel J. Ivory (@samueljivory) will be taking on the role of Intermediate Orchestra Conductor at the beginning of the VYSO’s 2025/26 season. With experience from the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra and Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Samuel is also a music theory teacher, composer and baroque trumpet musician who is passionate about music education and hopes to foster a positive learning environment in the rehearsal space and in the classroom. Samuel holds a Masters of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from the University of British Columbia, studying under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Girard, as well as a Bachelors of Music in Composition (magna cum laude) from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. He has participated in conducting workshops and institutes led by Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Dr. Jeffery Meyer, Charles Peltz and Gary Lewis, and in summer 2025, he will attend the University of Oregon conducting workshop where he will study with Maestro Neil Varon and Dr. David Jacobs. He previously received instruction in conducting from Dr. Jonathan Girard, Steven Amundson, and Dr. Chung Park. #VYSO #orchestra #youthsymphony #music #musiceducation #symphony #symphonyorchestra

As we wrap up our 95th anniversary season, we have also been getting ready to say goodbye to a member of our team, as Intermediate Orchestra Conductor Jin (Jack) Zhang (@jinzzh312) will be retiring at the end of this month. Since joining in 1997/98 season, Jin has been a part of VYSO for 27 seasons, and has no doubt been an important part of our community. Having studied at Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, throughout his career Jin has been recognized with honours including the AVIFF Award at Cannes 2018, and the Artistic Achievement Awards. We’ve been honoured to have Jin be an instrumental part of the orchestra for so many years, and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
